CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

It is almost midnight and I’m exhausted. In less than twenty-four hours, I’ve moved to Las Vegas, landed a job, met the New Soundz, stole a gun, and was devastated by Mario’s silence. Are all men awful? What about Drake? I thought he was a good man—kind, thoughtful, getting me the job without expecting anything in return. But is it just an act? Is that how men are in the beginning?

It isn’t exactly the first or even the fifth time I’ve been wrong about a man.

Can no-one be trusted? I came to Vegas with a purpose—to reconnect with the New Soundz community and expose Ricky Star for what he is and what he has done—what he’s probably still doing. My plan was to make him confess in order to show the world what he’s done. At first, I wanted to get justice for Rochelle, but now I know I need to get it for all of his victims. He needs to be fired and exposed. And above all else, to be stopped so that he can’t hurt anyone else. But maybe that isn’t enough.

Lying in bed, I glance down at my phone and open my photos. Here it is—the picture of the gun I swiped from Ricky’s office. With trembling fingers, I open a Google image search and upload the photo.

Details about the gun pop up immediately. It’s a Smith & Wesson Model 10 that holds six rounds. It’s quite popular and costs about a thousand dollars. There are several YouTube videos with demonstrations for cleaning and firing the weapon. Hmm.

With knowledge comes power.

I stare at the screen, ideas swirling around of how to use my newfound knowledge.

Would Ricky tell me the truth if I pointed his own gun in his face? Would he admit what he’d done to Rochelle? Would he confess to hurting her—and other women too? Would he finally face justice and rot in prison, where he couldn’t hurt anyone ever again?

He needs to pay. Not just for what he did to Rochelle, but for all the others he hurt. For all the women who have been silenced, brutalized, stripped of their power. It’s time to take a stand.

Are all men bad, or have I just never met a good one? Maybe Drake is genuine. Or maybe, if I spend more time with him, I’ll end up like I did the last time I trusted a man—bruised, battered, and ashamed, lying in a hospital bed.

Never again. I’m not going to lose my power, not this time.

As I drift off to sleep, I think about how Ricky Star stole Rochelle’s power, her dignity, and her spark. I’m going to get it back for you, Rochelle, even if it’s the last thing I ever do.
